As an alternative to the controversial cloud services on the Internet, which largely store content on foreign servers (e.g. Dropbox), we offer you your own storage area for your data, which you can use regardless of location. Your data is stored securely on our servers in the HNE. This service is based on the open source cloud storage service Nextcloud. Nextcloud synchronizes files, music and photos on multiple devices. Additionally, a web interface is available, which includes a photo gallery and an integrated PDF viewer. Documents can be edited directly in the web browser - even at the same time as others. A full-text search can be carried out across all files. As an alternative to the browser, there are native clients for Linux, Windows, Mac OS, iOS and Android. All data can be shared with other people, including people outside of HNE.
Nextcloud is very extensive, is constantly being developed and can be expanded with apps. Therefore, it is hardly possible to publish a current list of all features here. You can find the currently possible applications in the Nextcloud start screen.
ATTENTION: We do not separately back up the data you store on Nextcloud. This means that we back up the entire Nextcloud storage, but cannot restore individual files from it with reasonable effort that you may have accidentally deleted. Be careful when installing multiple computers with sync clients. If a file is deleted on one client, this file is automatically deleted on all clients. Nextcloud also offers a trash can in the web interface where you can find deleted files.
There are also other things to consider:
- The use of cloud storage can only be used during studies or as an employee
- You are responsible for backing up your data
- Access to Nextcloud is encrypted (via https).
- The service may be temporarily interrupted during maintenance work. The maintenance window is Fridays from 4-5 p.m. and daily from 11 p.m.-11:30 p.m.
